By forging them a hall pass, Veronica gets a makeover that exudes total “hell on wheels”, and is finally looked just as highly upon in the halls of Westerburg as the Heathers are. ![]() Heathers, taking place at Westerburg High School in 1989, follows the story of teenage outcast, Veronica Sawyer, who gets taken in by the most popular clique in school - the Heathers. Being a show dealing directly with high schoolers, and having such a wide adolescent fanbase, writers Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe collaborated to create a version of the musical suitable for high school-aged performers - thus, “ Heathers (High School Edition)” was born. After a smash run off-broadway, the musical gained a cult following of its own, and was soon released for licensing availability by the Samuel French licensing house. ![]() The musical was based on Daniel Waters’ 1988 cult classic film of the same name, starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. Heathers: The Musical opened in 2014 at New World Stages, an off-broadway theater complex in New York City.
